Crop improvement of grain sorghum in Australia - core breeding

Abstract

Project DAQ00015 was a continuation of the long standing Department of Primary Industries and Fisheries (DPI&F) sorghum breeding program (now Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry Queensland). Project activities included germplasm enhancement (pre-breeding), breeding technology development, and logistical and statistical support for sorghum research and development (R&D) and its coordination. The primary focus of the project was the
development of improved germplasm to increase the profitability of grain growers by increased yield and value of the grain and reduced production costs and losses. Benefits of germplasm and new breeding techniques have been delivered to growers through commercial breeding programs. Coordination and support activities also provide significant
benefits to growers.
