Abstract

The programme of the Bowen Horticultural Research Station, Queensland for evaluating mango varieties is briefly described. Five varieties introduced from Florida that are suitable for Queensland are described. These include Palmer, Haden and Carrie. The fruit of Palmer is large and oblong and the skin red with a yellow background when ripe. The flesh is free of fibre, sweet and very smooth. Haden has oval fruit with a red blush on the skin. The flesh has a moderate amount of fibre, is sweet and has a detectable turpentine flavour near the shoulders. However this flavour is mild so does not interfere with acceptability. The fruit of Carrie is slightly oblong, has a yellow skin and the flesh is very sweet and free of fibre.
