Abstract

Best yields were recorded from a basal fertilizer containing 70 lb N, 50 lb P205 and nil K per ac, followed by a side-dressing of 50 lb N per ac. A reduction in the plant stand in the high basal N plots is attributed to fertilizer bum, but this did not depress yields, which were roughly proportional to the amount of sulphate ammonia applied.
Low levels of P in the basal fertilizer conferred some measure of frost tolerance on the bean crop.
Seed size in the variety Saluggia was increased by nitrogen, particularly when applied in the basal fertilizer mixture.
