Distributions of Heliothis spp. (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) eggs and first instar larvae on pre-flowering, flue-cured tobacco plants in north Queensland

Abstract

Field sampling of tobacco plants at various stages of pre-flowering growth in northern Queensland in 1973-75 showed that eggs of Heliothis armigera (Hb.) and H. punctigera Wllgr. were laid in the same numbers on the lower surface of the leaves as on the upper surface. The majority were found on the middle to upper leaves, few being deposited on the tip leaves or basal leaves. First-instar larvae were found mostly on the lower surface of the leaves. It is concluded that insecticidal coverage of both surfaces of all the leaves except the tip and basal ones is needed when chemical control measures are taken against the eggs and first-instar larvae.
