Effect of the time of spraying of barban on four wild oat (Avena species) strains from the Darling Downs, Queensland.

Abstract

A pot trial was carried out using cream, grey and brown strains of A. ludoviciana and a brown strain of A. fatua, to assess the importance of time of barban application (8 oz/ac) relative to the previous emergence of wild oats. All strains were killed if sprayed 7 days after emergence. A. fatua showed 80% kill when sprayed 21 days after emergence. All A. ludoviciana strains showed increasing tolerance to barban with increasing age; the grey strain showed most tolerance. It is concluded that barban can give satisfactory control if applied < 14 days after emergence. F.s.-P.K.
