Abstract

Several insect pests in established plantations of Araucaria are discussed, and the influence of tree age, site quality, provenance, climatic conditions and natural enemies on the severity of infestation and extent of damage are outlined. There are few insect pests in plantations of A. bidwillii and A. hunsteinii, but insect problems have been encountered with A. cunninghamii, particularly in Papua New Guinea. However, these problems should not deter trials of A. curtninghamii in other areas. Diversification of planting fronts, retention of areas of natural vegetation adjacent to plantations and avoidance of replanting marginal sites are recommended to minimise pest problems.
