Abstract

A plant grown from tissue culture of Musa cv. Yangambi Km5 in north Queensland was considerably shorter than normal (3.38 vs. 4.18 m). The leaf habit of this dwarf was also distinctly different. The petioles were shorter and it had a lower leaf length/breadth ratio (3.1 vs 3.4). However, there was little difference in bunch weight and finger size between the mutant and its parent. The shorter stature of Dwarf Yangambi Km5 should simplify harvesting, and wind resistance may be enhanced. Dwarf Yangambi Km5 has been established in tissue culture and will be evaluated further.
