Environmental markets for graziers: Key markets, product opportunities and risksExport / Share Zeil-Rolfe, L. (2025) Environmental markets for graziers: Key markets, product opportunities and risks. Technical Report. Department of Primary Industries, Queensland.
AbstractEnvironmental markets provide mechanisms to incentivise sustainable land management and ecological restoration by enabling the trade of environmental goods and services, offering alternatives to regulation and attracting private investment. However, independent, practical information for landholders remains limited. This report examines environmental market opportunities relevant to Queensland graziers, including scheme availability, demand and supply drivers, benefits and costs, risks, and taxation considerations. Markets reviewed include the Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCU) scheme, Reef Credit Scheme, Land Restoration Fund (LRF), Nature Repair Market, and Cassowary Credit Scheme. The ACCU scheme is the most established, with over 2,500 projects nationally and significant participation in Queensland across agriculture, vegetation, and savannah burning methods. Other schemes target specific outcomes, such as water quality improvements in Great Barrier Reef catchments (Reef Credits), biodiversity and co‑benefits linked to carbon abatement (LRF), and rainforest and biodiversity restoration (Nature Repair and Cassowary Credits). Together, these markets present emerging opportunities for Queensland graziers, alongside material considerations relating to additionality, project viability, stacking of credits, and long‑term obligations.
