AbstractPine hybrids are already prominent in plantation forestry in Queensland, and hybrids are likely to play an important role in the emerging eucalypt plantation industry. Programs with both are or will be directed at high value products such as sawn timber, veneers, poles and heavy construction materials. Ensuring that trees havested have the required wood quality will be critical, and the deployment of clones displaying the required properties will be an important operational tool to achieve this. This paper reviews the nature and objectives of Queensland's softwood and hardwood plantation programs, and examines implications for hybrid breeding strategies.
