AbstractRhizome fibres in ginger are vascular bundles with a surrounding sheath of essentially non-lignified sclerenchyma fibre cells. These fibres are initiated at the apical meristem of each rhizome segment. Fibre development, in a commercial context, is the thickening of the fibre cell walls through the addition of cellulose. Rhizome fibre content closely follows total plant dry weight.
