Citrus wakonai is known from Goodenough Island, Milne Bay Archipelago in Papua New Guinea where it is a small understorey tree up to 6 m tall. It provides small edible fruit, but currently lacks potential as a source of new rootstocks or germplasm for the citrus industry due to viral susceptibility.
