Abstract

The use of photographic reference standards in estimation of comparative yields in rangelands was estimated in mulga (Acacia aneura) communities in SW Queensland. Four operators independently estimated pasture yield for each of 40 fixed quadrats (each 10 m2), using the reference standards. Yield estimated by all operators was closely correlated with actual yield, and there was no significant difference between estimates by different operators. It is suggested that the technique can be used to estimate and monitor the yield of pastures which vary markedly in composition, yield and structure, by using photo-standards collected from the paddocks being monitored and assessing yield in fixed quadrats.
