Abstract

Large variations in important pulping properties have been demonstrated for wood from trees, not only of different genera, but also between species within a genus, and between their provenances, families, and even the individual clones within families. Initial efforts in tree breeding concentrate on evaluating parent softwood trees for their potential pulp and papermaking properties without destroying the tree. These evaluations differentiate timber and, therefore, allows the optimization of the pulping process.
